I like to think of myself as a creative person. Matter of fact, whenever we go on vacation I always come home with a new piece of pottery that I painted on the beach and proudly add it to my collection. It has become a tradition of sorts. However, my creativity with a pencil is another story. As I watch my son and daughter make wonderful masterpieces that only 6 year olds can do, I find myself confined to stick figures and an odd looking penguins.
Recently, a friend invited me to a girl’s night out to a place where you can order wine, food, and, oh yeah, uncover your hidden talent of making beautiful art. So, for my 8th pick of the 12 days of holidays gifts from Richmond VA businesses I am suggesting a gift card or making your very own Monet at Spirited Art Richmond.
When I was first invited to Spirited Art, I thought it would be a waste of $35 seeing my ability in drawing is so limited. But, then I threw caution to the wind and decided to try something new. You know the saying, “If you think you can or think you can’t, you are right.” So off I went with a little self deprecating humor armed in my back pocket. If I can make fun of myself, then no one will make fun of my art!
I have to say I am so THRILLED I tried something new! The very talented art instructors are friendly, kind, and encouraging. They walk you through each step of the process and you immediately realize you are not making a replica of O’Keeffe…you are expressing your individual spirit! And, it turns out you don’t have to know how to draw AT ALL. If you can hold a pencil, you can make something great!
The photo in this post is of my first painting from Spirited Art, located in West Broad Village. As you can see, it isn’t worthy of a private gallery showing but it is much more than a stick figure! My colors aren’t as fancy as other’s who were in the class, but they are ME. When I left that evening, I was so proud of myself not only for trying something new but for having something fun to hang on my walls at home.
So for my 8th selection of the 12 days of holiday gifts from Richmond VA businesses, go ahead and let yourself be a kid again and know sometimes going outside the lines is much better than staying within. Thank you Spirited Art for a fantastic night and the confidence boost. My kids can’t wait to take a turn!
